I took a picture of this Coati (raccoon family) that you will find while traveling in Costa Rica. It is April 2016 and it is quite humid right now with the start of the rainy season. I was traveling here last December and the weather was comfortable. I have heard from the local population that October is quite hot and humid. So, I recommend not traveling to Costa Rica in October. I utilized AirBnB this time and I have a condo with all the amenities. Last year I utilized regular hotels and spent 1500 dollars for five days of lodging. This year I will only spent 350 dollars for seven days of lodging and I spent about 370 dollars for the flight out to Costa Rica. Not a bad business trip if you need to save money.
I recommend booking your flight at least four weeks out and make it for a Wednesday. If you can, try and stay seven days and fly out of Costa Rica on a Wednesday. I took the noon flight out and the airport was empty at 9:00am with no security line. Before I forget, two things about the San Jose, Costa Rica airport, ensure your airline ticket receipt shows that you paid the Costa Rican airfare fee, most airlines will already include this in the cost of your ticket, which is usually 27 dollars, otherwise you have to get in separate line to pay your fee prior to going to the ticket counter line. Second, if your like me, I like to buy a water after going through the security line to have with me prior to boarding the plane. One time they did a spot security check prior to everyone boarding the plane and we all had to dump our liquids. Another time there was no security inspection, so, you may want to check prior to purchasing liquids in the airport.
Now lets talk about transportation in Costa Rica. I have heard taking the bus is cheap and taxi’s are a little more expensive. I have not utilized these modes of transportation yet. Both times I have been in Costa Rica my wife and I rented a vehicle from Enterprise. My wife being the free spirit type, drove. Me being the logical type, put pillows around me, seat belted in tight and held the GPS to help navigate the roads. Some of the roads are not listed so having a GPS with a hot spot helped tremendously. In Costa Rica you usually input the name of the place you want to go instead of attempting to put in a street address. Enterprise will pick you up from the airport and drop you off to the airport. It only cost us 150.00 dollars for seven days use of the car and 15.00 a day for the GPS. However, full insurance was 500.00 dollars. And yes, you want full insurance. Last year my brother-in-law traveled to Costa Rica and while stopped at an intersection he was pushed forward by another vehicle that felt he did not go soon enough after the light turned green. If you drive in Los Angeles rush hour you should have no problems driving in Costa Rica. The roads are getting better in Costa Rica, however, they have several toll roads to pay for the road improvements. Ensure you go to an ATM and get some Costa Rican money called Callones. If you are traveling from San Jose to the Pacific Beach area you will usually have to go through four toll roads. The lowest priced toll road I have seen has been 50 callones or about 20¢. The highest priced toll road I have seen has been about 630 callones which is about $1.70. If you do not need the freedom to get from one location to the next you can also hire a driver for the time you are in Costa Rica. Fuel for your vehicle is about $4.70 a liter. Gas prices are high and yes, knowing the metric system helps. Most gas stations are full service. They pump the gas and wash your windows.

This trip I spent most the time in the Free Trade Zones. I did manage to visit the Poas Volcano this trip. I took the above picture at about 11:30 am. After that time the clouds start to move in and it can be difficult to see inside of the volcano. To make our CFO happy I planned out all my meetings and what I would visit on my leisure time to ensure money was well spent. To keep your food cost down, try and eat at places that do not have U.S. names. I have eaten at a Hard Rock Cafe and an Applebees in Costa Rica and it was quite a bit more expensive than United States. Some places in Costa Rica will add the tip into the cost of your meal, so, you may want to see if this is already on your receipt, however, a double tip is always a score for the server. Hopefully, some of my experiences will help you on your business trip to Costa Rica. If you have questions, feel free to contact me on our company website at www.aspensalesinc.com.
